Sr Carmel (Aleykutty) was the youngest child of late Mr.Varkey and late Mrs.Bridget of the Pulickal family. She was born on 1 May, 1921, at Pravithanam, Pala diocese.She was gentle by nature, used to do mortifications and pray for long time kneeling on the floor. She joined SD convent Chunangamvely in 1941, and made First Profession on 2 February, 1943 and Perpetual Profession on 6 June, 1954. Soon after her first profession, Sr.Carmel was sent to Ernakulam, to study nursing. She worked at various places like Chunangamvely, Muvattupuzha, Malayattoor, Thuravoor, Nellimattam, Udayanapuram and Munchirai. She was a hard working person. She led a simple life and had great attachment to Jesus, her saviour and master! Everything, even the painful realities of life, was taken by her as the will of God and hence could move around joyfully. Sr.Carmel was straight forward, courageous and a person with great foresight. As time went on, she started showing the symptoms of tuberculosis, and was isolated and treated at Kottayam. Due to the timely care and proper treatment, her health started improving. Then she was sent to Munchirai. There she vomited blood several times showing the recurrence of TB. Soon she was affected by lung cancer and was treated at Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. There she became very serious, received the Sacrament of the Sick consciously.She was brought to SD Provincial House, Chethipuzha. Her last days, she spent in SD convent, Podippara. She slept in the Lord at 9.30 p.m. on 2 October, 1990 and was buried at Podippara parish cemetery. Dear Sr.Carmel, we experience your power of intercession to find out the lost materials.
