Sr.Carmelatha SD (Lucy Joseph) was born as the second daughter out of eight children of late KM Joseph and Thresyamma in the Mattathil family in the diocese of Pala. After completing her pre-degree studies, she joined the SD Congregation as a candidate. She took her first vows on January 7, 1980 and her perpetual vows on September 8, 1980. After completing her nursing studies from the Samaritan Nursing College, Pazhanganad, she obtained a postgraduate degree in Religious Science from Regina Munthi, Rome. She then completed a one-year formator’s course at MOC Mannanam. She served as Postulant Mistress, Novice Mistress and Junior Mistress during the periods 1991-2000, 2006-2009 and 2021-2024. She was a teacher for the aspirants at Amala Theological College, Changanassery for a long time since 1991. She served as the Provincial Superior of the St.Joseph Province, Changanassery from 2000-2006 and 2015-2021. She served as the General Medical Councellor and Director of Samaritan Hospital, Pazhanganad from 2009 to 2015. She was a person of prayer and faith, with a smile, love and care. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer in October 2021. Despite the treatment, she happily fulfilled the responsibilities assigned to her. That holy soul, who received the anointing of the sick from her own brother priest, departed for heaven on August 19, 2024. May her soul rest in peace!
