Focus Area
As Sisters of the Destitute numerous and varied have been our ministries of sharing the compassionate love of Christ with the least, the lost and the lowest of the society. Then it came to our mind that it would be better if we concentrate on particular areas of our ministries so that we can develop our services in a more systematic, scientific and authentic way so as to make its fruit reach out to the wider society, even to the extent of forming Research Centres connected to some of our worthy Homes of Service. Thus the General Synaxis of 20….assigned particular realms of our ministry as a Focus Area to each Province. Accordingly St. Joseph Province was entrusted with the ministry of training and rehabilitating the Differently Abled making it as their Focus Area. The growth and development of TIMRT as the offspring of Mercy Home is a remarkable accomplishment of our Focus Area.

Training Institute Of Multi Rehabilitation Technology (TIMRT):
Differently abled children experience significant challenges due to sensory integration issues, locomotor difficulties, speech problems which manifest specific symptoms or behaviours, difficulty with motor skills, sensitivity to certain textures or sounds, walking difficulty etc. These difficulties impair their daily life and activities, including academic performance, social interactions and daily living skills. After thorough analysis and evaluation of these impediments Doctors have recommended various therapeutic treatments like Sensory integration therapy, Speech therapy, Physio therapy, Occupational therapy, Psychotherapy etc.as an essential intervention to help, manage and improve their capabilities.
It was in this situation that TIMRT was started in 1997 as a remedial step to solve the above mentioned disability challenges as far as possible, and as a developmental project of Mercy Home Chethipuzha,
extending her specific rehabilitation services for the disabled outside the Institution. It was registered as a separate Society in August 1999 namely MRID Society (Multi Rehabilitation Institute for the Disabled). In 2003 a separate building was set up in the Mercy Home campus, well equipped with advanced facilities for physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy etc. In 2014 a new wing was started as Dr. Jisma Joseph ASD and LD Unit for training for Autism and Learning Disability children.

History
The idea of a Multi Rehabilitation Centre open to the public, initially bloomed in the creative and altruistic mind of Sr. Mariella SD, resulting from her own experience as a constant companion and healer of the physically challenged children at Mercy Home, since 1978. Sr. Mariella Kanjirakombil SD passed her Diploma and Degree Courses in Occupational Therapy (B.O.T.) from Vellore Christian Medical College and since then she had been the life and breath of Mercy Home.
Mercy Home is a charitable residential home for the physically challenged children and its service to the public is limited. But TIMRT opens her doors to all types of disabled children from far and near to give them therapy and training. It is also a Training Institute offering a two and a half year Diploma Course in Multi Rehabilitation Technology, recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), the Supreme Authority for granting Recognition in India. This is the only authorized Course of this kind in the whole of South India.
Tracing back the history of TIMRT we can see that initially it was started as a non-formal Six month Course in 1997with a view to training more people to help the differently abled in more places. In 1998 it was made a systematic and formal Two year Course namely Diploma in Multi Rehabilitation Workers’ Course (DMRW), which could secure the recognition of CRI in 2000. Later it developed as MRT Centre and in 2007 according to the direction of RCI the Course was restructured as a two and a half year long DRT Course. This year it is the i5th batch of DRT that is going on.
Qualification for joining DRT course: Should have passed Plus 2 with Science group scoring 50 % or above marks. Admission is open to boys and girls.

ANUGRAHA SCHOOL FOR INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED, Perambur North, CHENNAI
Anugraha Special School for Intellectually Challenged children was started in 1994, sensing this need of the locality. It was a humble beginning with four children in a small shed in the Convent compound. Gradually more children were coming seeking admission, and our own Sisters got trained and qualified as Special Educators. In 2000 the school was shifted to a spacious and well-built new building in the same compound, with an accommodation capacity for 100 children. Children are given basic training in academic skills like listening, speaking reading, writing, drawing and daily living skills like table etiquette, taking food, wearing dress, toilet habits, playing, singing, dancing, doing simple manual works like cleaning the room, cleaning vessels etc. Some simple vocational training also is given like mat making, basket making etc. Not everyone can do everything, so each child is given personal care and attention and is trained according to his capacity. Those who have some comprehension capacity are given special coaching to appear for the SSLC Examination according to the NIOS Scheme. The school has a good Sensory Room, a play park, a well-equipped Physiotherapy unit and a well-qualified and experienced Physiotherapist, able, efficient and dedicated. At present the strength of the School is 68 children, one Physiotherapist, 12 teachers and three non-teaching members of the staff. All our teachers are very committed, with a motherly care for the children. So far about 470 children have been trained in this Institution, and 10 children, helped by scribes for Examinations, have passed SSLC. in three batches.
