SD Changanassery

When the Congregation was divided into Regions in 1980  a plot of land was bought at Podippara near Ithithanam in Changanassery and built rather a big Convent there which came to be the Regional House of Changanassery St. Joseph’s Region. It was blessed on 19 March 1984. Sr.Concelia (Regional Superior), Sr.Reji, Sr.Raichel and Sr.Sarala were the pioneer membersof the Community. In 1985, when the Region was raised as  a Province this continued as the Provincial House. The Provincial House was shifted to Chethipuzha when a new building was constructed there in 1990. Then the Convent at Podippara was made the Novitiate House of the Province. There has been existing a warm relationship between the Convent and the Parish till this day.The tombs of Sr. Emilia and Sr. Carmel who died before the construction of the Provincial House cemetery at Chethipuzha  are at Podippara Parish cemetery. Many faithful come to pray at the tomb of Sr. Carmel, since they get favors with her heavenly intercession.

Bishop Mar Joseph Pallikaparambil invited us to open a convent at Thodanal to render our service in that backward area. Fr.Varghese Parakulangara, a parishioner of Thodanal donated 50 cents of land for a convent with a Home for the Aged. Accordingly a building was completed under the supervision of Rev. Fr.Mathew Vallopilly the Vicar, with the help of the parishioners and well-wishers of the locality. An eight bedded  Old Age Home had also been inbuilt.  Bishop Mar Pallickaparambil blessed the House on 20 December 1996. Srs. Sibilina (Sup.), Stella Maris, Therese and Merin were the pioneers. Sisters are actively involved in education, pastoral activities and community development programs. Sr. Stella Maris who was serving as the HM of our Palakkattumala School got transferred as HM to the Infant Jesus LP School with the intention of reforming it into a better state. A Nursery School was also started by the Parish  and Sr. Merin Kalapurackal was appointed its teacher. We are in charge of the Parish activities, and are zealous to make regular family visit in the Parish and also in the nearby Dalit colony.

SD Kumily was started as  a Prayer House of the Province on 18 May1998, near Attapallam St. Thomas Forane Church. The purchase of the land and construction of the House were all under the direction of Rev. Fr. George Kottadikunnel, the former Forane Vicar. Sr. Manonja (Sup.), Rosily Jose and Meera Jose were the pioneers. From 2005 to 2009 it served as the Novitiate house of the Province.  The tough topography and extreme cold climate of the place make it difficult for Sisters to use this House as a place of prayer. So it lost its status as Prayer House. Identifying the need of the place we have started a Physiotherapy – Autism Centre here named as Mar Thoma Rehabilitation Centre, as an extension of the MRT at Chethipuzha Mercy Home. It has proved to be helpful for the needy in the vicinity. Along with the three other Congregations in the Parish we are also active in the pastoral activities aiming at faith formation and development of the parishioners. Sisters are teaching in the Schools of the Corporate Management of the Diocese, as they get appointed or transferred.

As we were convinced of  the need to have a Convent at Karikattoor near Manimala we decided to respond to the request of the Vicar and parishioners and began our service staying first at the vacant presbytery, and then  at a rented house. Srs. Leo (Superior), Lotsy, Riya Rose and Tess were the pioneers. When the construction of the convent was completed it was
blessed by Mar Mathew Arackal, the Kanjirapilly Bishop on 31 March 2005. Sisters are enthusiastic to build up a faith community through house visit, catechesis and pious associations.

From July 2005 Sr. Raisa was going to the Corporate Management Schools at Erumely, Chirakadavu and Elangoi for counselling, on request of the Diocese authorities.

While the Province was on the look out for getting more chances to spread out in the Kanjirapilly Diocese, Very Rev.Fr. James Thalachelloor the Chancellor informed us about the possibility to begin a Convent in the Parish of Grace Mount in the high range area. Accordingly we managed to buy a plot of land near the Church and built a House there. Even before the Convent was constructed a batch of our Sisters had  made a family visit campaign in the Parish, staying at the church building. This was a great motivation for the Parishioners. There are about 75 families in the Parish. The Convent was blessed on 25 March 2004 by Bishop Mar Mathew Arackal. Srs. Vimal (Superior), Sr. Emerit and Liss Jose Vattakalam were the pioneers.
Sisters are entrusted with the responsibility of Parish activities and they do it with much vigour and enthusiasm, with the support and cooperation of the parishioners Sometimes our Sisters  get appointed in the Schools of Kanjirapilly Corporate Management in this area, and then they stay in this Convent.

With the permission of Kanjirapilly Bishop Mar Mathew Vattakuzhy, Fr.Mathew Puthumana the Vicar invited us to Chemmannu in  the high range District of Idukki,. to carry out pastoral activities and to provide primary medical care. Accordingly on 27 May 1991, we opened a convent and a dispensary in the land that we …… Sisters are engaged in education, nursing care, faith formation and de –  addiction programs. Srs. Raichel (Superior), Savio, Jess Therese and Deepthi Maria were the pioneers. Later because of the strict regulations of the Govt. insisting on the presence of a duty Doctor we had to terminate the Dispensary.

On 19 September 2001, in the interest of Mar Mathew Vattakuzhy and Mar Mathew Arackal, the Bishops of Kanjirapilly Diocese, SD took charge of the Serenity Home, a terminal care centre for the poor, located at Elikulam, between Pala and Ponkunnam, owned by the Diocese and managed by the Sisters of Charity of St. John of God. The Institution was handed over to SD for management since the SCJG Sisters were terminating their service. There were only 8 inmates at the time when we took charge, but now  the number exceeds to 70. Both the ladies and gents are admitted. A retired Priest is appointed by the Bishop as resident chaplain of the Institution. Every year one batch of  Brothers from Vadavathoor Major Seminary stay here for ten days to impart voluntary service and thereby  to acquire training. Members of Vincent de Paul Society, Parish Youth Association (CYMA) etc. also make visits and help the patients. An annual  gathering of our benefactors is held every year  in connection with Onam celebrations. Generous help of numerous benefactors is the main source of income for the financial management of this Home.

In addition. to their service in Serenity Home Sisters are actively  engaged in all the pastoral activities of the Parish. Srs. Leo (Superior), Pratibha, Sherin and Meera Jose were the pioneers in the Community

This convent was established on 5 June 1993 in the Mar Sleeva Parish of Chellarkovil, a high range area in Idukki District, as invited by Rev. Fr.George Kottadikunnel, to give leadership in the pastoral activities of the parish. A  Nursery school  and  Dispensary were functioning well in the initial years when there were only meagre conveyance facilities for the common folk. Later we closed down  the dispensary because of rigid Govt. Regulations.Sisters try to strengthen the faith of the parish community through their pastoral ministries like family visits, prayer meetings etc. Srs. Marceline (Superior.), Jancy, Keerthana and Roseline Elavanal were the pioneers. Sr. Roseline was working as a High School teacher in the schools of Kanjirapilly Corporate Management in the high range areas. Besides, in the early years our Sisters were also rendering service in the Diocesan Pastoral Centre at Anakkara.

A retired teacher Thodukayil Mr. Joseph Mani and his wife Annakutty who lost their only son Immanuel at an early age were living lonely and grief stricken in their house at Mevida, with nobody to care for them. The old couple needed a support which they expected would get from us. After proper inquiry into the matter, discussions with the concerned persons, with the Parish Priest and with the Bishop of Pala a contract of mutual consent and conditions was made and signed by the couple and Mother Judit the then Provincial Superior of Changanassery Province. Document was registered as contributing their property of about 3 acres of land with a rather good house in it, as gift to SD on condition that we should take care of them till their death letting them continue to live in the same house. They also expressed their  wish to begin a charitable Home there for the poor After making some alterations and arrangements in the settings of the house as  needed for the enclosure of a convent we occupied the house while they continued to live in a partitioned portion of the house under our loving care and protection.  Bishop Mar Pallickaparambil blessed the house on 1 February 2000 ceremoniously. Sr Patrick Panamthottam was appointed the Superior with Sr. Jesleena as her companion. A chapel was  made ready in the house and was consecrated on 6 February 2000.

After the death of the grandma in 2009, the house was rebuilt as a double storey building with a capacity to admit 26 lady psychiatric patients. The Institution is registered as Immanuel Home Psycho Social Rehabilitation Centre for Women in memory of their dear son Immanuel.   His Excellency Mar Joseph Pallickaparambil blessed the Institution on 20 January 2012. The Institution is functioning appreciably well.

The Grandpa Mr. Joseph Mani Thodukayil who was a Freedom fighter, bid farewell and left for his Heavenly home  on 6 January 2014 at the age of 92, having fulfilled his desire to make his home a home for many other homeless. We have also the fulfillment that we could  fulfill his dreams of a happy life and peaceful death for him and for his beloved, and also for many other unhappy and unloved lives, sharing with them the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.
